about

Producer, composer, and sound designer Cha Blasco presents his debut full-length album, Urania. A wide diversity of influences, relentless vision, and exceptional production converge to make Urania one of the most singular, compelling releases of the year.

A musical journey of remarkable breadth and imagination, Urania comprises everything from avant garde electronic music to free jazz to prog metal to synth soundscapes. Despite its diversity, the songs are unified by cohesive rhythmic, emotional, and atmospheric concepts.

Dynamic arrangements which frequently diverge into unpredictable territory weave the album into a poignant narrative, the story of a romantic bond slowly deteriorating across twelve musical meditations. Songs such as ‘Talking to the River’ invoke Peter Gabriel’s influence, while ‘Broken Toys’ imagines a heavier, more industrial take on St. Vincent. ‘Desire/Deserve’ could be heard as a heavily textured exploration of late-era King Crimson.

Producers Adrian Benavides and Michael Day’s approach was heavily influenced by David Bowie and Prince, giants whose untimely deaths colored the album’s tracking and production process.

Despite this range of influences, the strongest impression Urania leaves on the listener is that it doesn’t really sound like anything that has come before it. With post-modern pop at its core and a diverse range of musics at its fringes, the album’s uncanny explorations of vast musical landscapes and exceptionally realized vision make it an enigmatic, aggressively unique, vital musical statement.

In additon to Blasco’s bandmates, Johan Roos Högberg & Linnea Sigurdson, the album features session musicians Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr. Mister), Jamal Moore (Usher, CeeLo Green), Biggi Vinkeloe (Barre Phillips, Peeter Uuskyla), Eoghan McCloskey (Vex, The Invincible Czars), and Colorado Chamber Orchestra member Michael Weaver. Thomas Blomster (Markus Reuter’s Todmorden 513) contributes additional arrangements and performances as well. Benavides and Day also contribute guitar, bass, live drumming, synth, sound design, and arrangements throughout the album.

Adrian Benavides has worked on studio and live productions for artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Daughtry, Childish Gambino, Crobot, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), and Goo Goo Dolls. Michael Day has produced albums for Vex, The Stan Laurels, Calico King, and The Matt Butler Quartet.

Track Name: Chained
Chained
Chained baby
Chained

Sea change
Widow holds a sea shell
Wanna hold the sea still
Don't wanna leave it all behind her

But
Shake chains
Break chains and leave it all behind
Shake, shake

Widowed
Maroon awaiting the big flood
Memories in a tight hold
Cannot leave it all behind her

But
Break chains and leave it all behind
You gotta break, change and leave it all behind
You gotta shake, shake and leave it all behind
You gotta shake, shake

Sister
You gotta be an inappropriate sis
Look further
And hold on to your dream

Sister
You want the inappropriate thing
But it's so sweet
you'll turn waves around

You gotta wake up, shape up
Keep it in your mind
Wake up, shake up
And leave the past behind

Track Name: Colour Blind
At the station to meet you
Went there just to greet you
Fell apart at the same place
Now I gather up your face
But you're everyone I ever saw
How could I ever know, how could I tell
You from all the rest
You from all the rest

High ambitions stuck in the parking lot
Well, is this what you want, is this what you want?
History of ours, it stays so close behind
But do you think it could save us now
I don't think it will work this time
Oh, colour blind

At the station to meet you
Went there just to greet you
With a sign that read your name
But the train it never came
And of all the people that passed by
Not one gave me an eye
The past turned away
You... you turned away

My beating heart keeps me in the parking lot
Is this what I want, is this what I want?
Words of ours, they kept me alive
But do you think they will save us now
Do you think it will work this time?
Oh, colour blind

At the station to meet you
I'll be there just to greet you
One leg on each track
I'd stop the train if you'd ask for that
I get the feeling that you know me well
But how could you ever tell
What would you say
If you knew my name
If you knew my name

High ambitions stuck in the parking lot
Well, is this what you want, is this what you want?
History of ours, it stays so close behind
But do you think they will save us now
Do you think it will work this time?
Oh, colour blind

Track Name: New Playlist
I see us on the bus making faces
Whistling America, now we don't have to act
No truth, no lie, no amendment
No crack in the pavement
Could break this engagement
(I want to do this too)

I see us on a path out in nature
Wuthering Heights, let me in in your window
Thought I had learned to be patient
Now I don't want to wait
It’s not why I’m here for
(I want to do this too
I don't want to wait it’s not why I’m here for)

And when you breathe with me
The moment when our heart rates meet
Sensation of our unity
I close my eyes, I feel you’re near
(Take a deep breath, take a deep breath)

I see us untidy and naked
Fingers of Love, now we don't have to ask
Love sure was a slippery salesman
Past the hesitation
Past the trepidation

I see us making love, making plans
Singing You turn me on, I'm a Radio
Come rain, come shine, we dare
Dig where we stand
Earth in our hands
(Take a deep breath, take a deep breath)

And when you breathe with me
The moment when our heart rates meet
Sensation of our unity
I close my eyes, I feel you’re near

Yeah, when you breathe with me
The moment when our heart rates meet
Sensation of our unity
I catch my breath, you pull me in

I see us in front of the board
Shouting out Harper Valley PTA
We know what we're here for
The ideals we stand for
The children that we care for

I see us on a train, on a boat, on a plane
In a song, wherever we might be
We've come a long way on this road
Past the hesitation
Obsession, trepidation
(I want to do this too)

But we're still on the bus making faces
Whistling America, now we don't have to act
No truth, no lie, no amendment
No crack in the pavement
Could break this engagement
Could break this engagement

Track Name: Broken Toys
My friend, when you had me
The sweetest thing
We lit fire and melted
Rules were disobeyed

Making a fool of anyone who claimed
The right to say our names
They didn't know, how could they know?
How could they know?

But what am I sayin'?
You got to go
We lit fire and melted
You got to go

For all the reasons being
But you could not see
For all the human beings
That you could not be

You could have lied

All the broken toys you hold
All the damaged goods you store
All the words you tried to say
all the truth you dared, but failed
Let it go, let it drift away
Let it drift away, away

Track Name: Jump Start
Weekend in a jar
These days I have no heart
These days I have no heart
These days I have no heart
No need to make a jump start
No need for small talk

In a can in a jar
These days I live in the car
Run off anytime I want
Run off anytime I want
No need to make a jump start
Wheel stuck in the mud

Weekend in the jar
These days without heart
These days without heart
Run off anytime you want
No need to make a jump start
No need to make a jump start

Track Name: Could It Be (The Family Tree)
Could it be this work I'm taking
Pulling round the ferris wheel is a
Postcard from a fairground aching
The joy that it could not bring

My hands beating the drum from you
Let go this beating of my drum
My hands beating the drum for you
Let go this beating of my drum

x4

I know we've been speaking of virtue
I know we've been speaking of truth
But I'm not the one to over on destiny
And shake some leaves of the family tree

(My hands beating the drum from you)
Let go this beating of my drum)

Track Name: Talking To The River
Our sign was always a question mark
But I couldn't play the part you gave me
Memories of the times we lost control
They're all carved out in stone
But that pearl of tear that's fallen far and hangs down from your lip
Well, I don't want it
Still the sweet caress across my back from your fingertips
Oh, it breaks my heart

Insights you get as you move along
Are they supposed to make you whole? (Just asking)
Mistakes, you should not make them twice
Well, I come back to them any chance I find
As if one day I'll pull the right thing from the hat I'm under
But what would that be?
As if unraveling the cause for every harm or wonder
Would make me happy

Face to face with someone I loved
A mirror showing everything I'm so afraid of
Sometimes I feel like we never touched
Or came close just to cover up the dirt
If I misled you I am sorry, it was not my intention
I never wanted to
We created what we could with all the best intentions
Desire is no fool

I made my way out of the restaurant
Alone into the desert storm
Funny when you thought you had it all
Then what you thought you had is gone
But I remember every wasted hour in your backseat
Waiting for the turn-on
Still the shiver I get each time that you speak
Oh, it breaks my heart

Our sign was always a question mark
But I couldn't play the part you gave me
Memories of the times we lost control
They're all carved out in stone
But that pearl of tear that's fallen far and hangs down from your lip
Well, I don't want it
Still the sweet caress across my back from your fingertips
Oh, it breaks my heart
I made my way out of the restaurant
Alone into the desert storm
Funny when you thought you had it all
Then what you thought you had is gone
But I remember every wasted hour in your backseat
Waiting for the turn-on
Still the shiver I get each time that you speak
Oh, it breaks my heart

Track Name: Desire / Deserve
Thought I'd stay half awake
Thought I'd listen to what you said
Could have had it some other way
Could have saved it for another day
Could have laid in your bed
These things dissolve within my head
A new year comes when summer ends
Other things they never change

Desire is in your heart
Deserve the things you've got
Want me in your arms
Deserve the things you want
I used to send you but now I don't
I used to send you but now I won't

Look at the children that we made
And brought up under such distress
How will I know a kiss from pain
Laid upon a baby's face
Blame that I put on myself
Parts break and part ways
Everything turns into something else
Everything turns into something else

Desire is in your heart
Deserve the things you've got
Want me in your arms
Deserve the things you want
I used to send you but now I don't
I used to send you but now I won't

Desire is in your heart
Deserve the things you've got
Want me in your arms
Deserve the things you want
I used to send you but now I don't
I used to send you but now I won't

Track Name: Theater
Some sort of illusion keeps coming to me
Some sort of intrusion in this building
I know this place from way back, way back when
Conscience was talking to me like a mean old friend

The longer the waiting, the sweeter it gets
Hey, I've been waiting a lifetime I'm out of breath
I don't even have words for such a phrase

Maybe I'm satisfied but too scared to show it
I might have done something good but how will I ever know this
Mirror on the wall surely made it look bad
Paddler of the ocean with holes in his hands

The more I try, the further away I get
From where I was heading, I'm out of breath
It's high time I put this kid to rest
I don't care if you weep or if you moan
I don't care for all the clothes you've outgrown
What matters now is the acceptance of fate

Some sort of illusion keeps coming to me
Some sort of intrusion in this building
But if this theatre really is the place
Pull up the curtains lets make some space

First act: Let the audience know what's in store
Second act: Give them what they came here for
Third act: Risk applause, uproar, outrage
But I don't care if they weep or if the moan
I don't care for all the clothes long outgrown
What matters now is what happens here on stage

I keep trying, I keep changing the manuscript
I keep messing it up just for the hell of it
Better get started before I lose the grip
Or else this moment's gonna be forsaken
I keep messing it up just for the hell of it
This moment’s gonna be forsaken
I forget lines and I mix up parts
I confuse lies with this work of art
Work of art? More likely art torn apart
The moment passed and I stood there naked
I keep trying, I keep messing it up, better get started before I lose...

Track Name: Final Call (The Never Dream)
I never dreamed that I would ever want something so bad
Never thought I'd envy you for something that you have
I never cared before, now how do I dare?
Lift this spirit, put me way up where
I catch the signal; call me
Come make a final call
I'm on my knees, my ear is nailed to the wall

Sound distorted, you're voice is lost
A certain impression I can't come across
The one explanation that could help us
Maker, Maker, who on Earth could save us
Psychologists let you talk too much
Sleeping pills keep you out of touch
Spiritual therapy, I don't dare for such...

(I never dream)

Sound distorted, your voice is lost
Decryption failure, blocked by firewall
The one connection that could help us
Is gone for all the insurances we paid for
Murderers and thieves that might go to jail
Market economists? Put them anywhere else
You, my love, you can go to Hell!

Can catch the signal, call me
[noll, sju, noll, tre, noll, ett, sex, fyra, noll, noll, sex, tre, noll] (repeat)
